NUEVA YORK (APRNEWS) - Former Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the Biden administration's new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, semiconductors, and medical products should also cover other types of vehicles and goods.
Expanding Tariffs
"They also need to extend these tariffs to other vehicles and a wide range of other products," Trump told reporters as he entered the court for his trial in New York for payments to a pornographic actress in exchange for silence.
The former US president criticized Biden for not taking stronger action on Chinese exports earlier and claimed credit for the tariff policies that his Democratic successor has maintained, as both gear up for a rematch in the November elections.
Tariff Policies
Biden unveiled a package of significant tariff increases on various Chinese imports on Tuesday, including electric vehicle batteries, computer chips, and medical products. This move risks escalating tensions with Beijing in an election year as Biden aims to appeal to voters critical of his economic policies.
"He wants to impose substantial tariffs on China, which is something I suggested: 'Where have they been for three and a half years? They should have done this a long time ago,'" Trump remarked.
Trade Dynamics
Trump's broader tariff imposition during his presidency from 2017 to 2021 initiated a tariff war with China. As a candidate this year, he has proposed tariffs of 60% or more on all Chinese products and a general tariff of 10% on products from all origins.
Biden has touted electric vehicles as a key component of his economic and climate revitalization plans. However, Trump criticized Biden's efforts to promote electric vehicle production, stating that Michigan's automotive industry is struggling.
