Microsoft has announced a significant transformation in its keyboards, marking the most substantial change in three decades by introducing a dedicated key for artificial intelligence (AI). This innovation will allow users direct access to Copilot, Microsoft's AI tool, on new PCs equipped with Windows 11.
The Copilot key will provide users with quick access to advanced AI functions such as search, email composition, and image creation. Developed by OpenAI, an entity in which Microsoft is a major investor, Copilot has proven its utility in previous products like Microsoft 365 and Bing search.
Microsoft's Executive Vice President, Yusuf Mehdi, described this change as a "transformative" moment comparable to the introduction of the Windows key almost 30 years ago. Mehdi noted that this new key will simplify and amplify the user experience.
The new keyboards, featuring the Copilot key, are expected to be available in Microsoft products starting February. The official unveiling of these products will take place at CES, one of the most significant tech events of the year, commencing next week in Las Vegas.
Copilot, based on OpenAI's powerful GPT-4 language model, has previously been integrated into products like Word, PowerPoint, and Teams in Office 365. It enables users to summarize meetings, draft emails, and create presentations efficiently.
Microsoft's move follows the trend of other tech companies, such as Apple, which has integrated voice assistant functions into its devices. However, Microsoft's implementation of Copilot in its keyboards highlights its emphasis on artificial intelligence and its strategic partnership with OpenAI.
It's worth noting that the close relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI is currently under investigation by the UK's competition watchdog, especially after a series of boardroom shake-ups further strengthened the ties between the two companies.
