Experts from 30 nations are set to play a pivotal role in a comprehensive report evaluating the capabilities and risks associated with advanced AI systems. The International Scientific Report on Advanced AI Safety is a significant initiative that aims to consolidate the best scientific research on AI safety, providing valuable insights for policymakers and guiding future discussions on the responsible development of AI technology.

This landmark report builds upon the success of the UK AI Safety Summit held last November, where participating countries endorsed the Bletchley Declaration, signifying their commitment to collaborative efforts addressing AI safety concerns.

An esteemed Expert Advisory Panel, consisting of 32 prominent international figures, has been unveiled for this initiative. Notable members include Dr. Hiroaki Kitano, CTO of Sony in Japan; Amandeep Gill, UN Envoy on Technology; and Dame Angela McLean, Chief Scientific Adviser for the UK. This diverse and accomplished panel will provide valuable insights and guidance throughout the report's development, ensuring a comprehensive and objective assessment of the capabilities and risks associated with advanced AI.

The initial findings from the report are scheduled to be published ahead of South Korea’s AI Safety Summit this spring. A more detailed and comprehensive publication will follow, coinciding with France’s summit later this year. These publications aim to contribute to and enrich discussions at both events, fostering a global dialogue on AI safety.

The international report follows the release of a UK paper last year, which included declassified information from intelligence services, highlighting the risks associated with frontier AI. Michelle Donelan, UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, expressed excitement about the report's development, considering it a significant part of the enduring legacy of November’s AI Safety Summit and celebrating the collaboration of countries who agreed on the Bletchley Declaration.

Professor Yoshua Bengio, a pioneer AI researcher from Quebec’s Mila Institute, emphasized the importance of the publication in informing discussions at AI Safety Summits hosted by the Republic of Korea and France later this year.

The principles guiding the report’s development are inspired by the IPCC climate change assessments – emphasizing comprehensiveness, objectivity, transparency, and scientific assessment. This framework aims to ensure a thorough and balanced evaluation of AI’s risks.
