Key Points

  • Javier Milei's administration raises congressional salaries by nearly 30% amidst recent budget cuts.
  • The increases surpass those given to public administration workers and retirees.
  • Documents signed by government officials confirm two cumulative raises totaling 29.92%.

The government of Argentine President Javier Milei has increased congressional salaries by 30%, exceeding recent raises granted to public administration workers and retirees.

Cenital leaked official documents dated February 22, signed by Vice President of the nation and Senate President, Victoria Villarruel, as well as by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Martín Menem, indicating two increases totaling 29.92%.

These two cumulative raises, one of 16% starting January 1, 2024, and another of 12% from February 1, 2024, were disclosed by Ámbito.

"In view of the political responsibility, the signatories of this agreement on behalf of the employer undertake to grant it based on the availability in the budgetary items, promoting the necessary procedures before the presidencies of both Chambers," the document states.

Context of Cutbacks

The information surfaced amid budget cuts, closure of public entities, privatizations, mass layoffs, and other measures aimed at reducing state investment, which have triggered protests and strikes in recent weeks.

It is worth noting that federal public administration workers received a 16% increase in January, while the compensation for retirees and pensioners reached 27.18% since March 1.
